Afterpay Hardship Options: What Afterpay Can Actually Adjust When You Cannot Pay

Updated November 2, 2026 Β· 6-minute read

The short answer: if you cannot keep up with Afterpay payments, contact Afterpay as soon as possible through the app's Help section or its secure hardship form and say you are experiencing financial hardship. Published options include adjusting your payment schedule, waiving late fees, and setting up a payment plan β€” and while Afterpay assesses your request it may place your account on hold to minimise late-fee or payment impacts. During an agreed hardship arrangement you cannot make new purchases with Afterpay. This page describes Afterpay's published AU/NZ process; US readers should check their country's Afterpay help pages, as terms differ.

What Afterpay says it can do

Separately, Afterpay's app lets you reschedule a single upcoming payment (within limits β€” not payments due in under 24 hours, already overdue, or for travel orders). That self-serve move is not a hardship arrangement: use it for a one-off timing problem, and use the hardship route for a genuine inability to pay.

How to ask β€” and what to say

  1. Contact Afterpay before you miss the payment, not after. Early contact is the single biggest factor in getting an arrangement.
  2. State it plainly: 'I am experiencing financial hardship because [job loss / reduced hours / medical costs / other change]. I cannot meet the payment of $[amount] due on [date]. I am asking for [a payment plan / a schedule adjustment / a late-fee waiver].'
  3. Offer a realistic alternative: the amount you can pay, and the date you can pay it. A specific proposal is easier to approve than a general plea.
  4. Get the arrangement in writing: the new dates, the amounts, whether fees are waived, and when your account can be used again.
  5. Keep paying what you agreed. A broken hardship arrangement returns you to the collections track faster than no arrangement at all.

While you are on a hardship arrangement

Your account is paused for new purchases until you have paid all amounts you owe under the arrangement. When the arrangement is complete and everything is paid, you may contact Afterpay to discuss using it again β€” reinstatement is assessed case by case and is not guaranteed, and your spend limit may be lower than before. Afterpay also notes that payments already made (including early repayments) cannot be reversed or refunded under its terms. If your situation worsens during the arrangement, contact Afterpay again rather than silently missing a plan payment.

Free help alongside Afterpay

You do not have to negotiate alone. In Australia, the National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007, published on Afterpay's own help pages) is a free, independent government service whose financial counsellors can negotiate with Afterpay and other creditors on your behalf. In New Zealand, Afterpay's hardship page points to MoneyTalks, a free financial helpline. In the UK, StepChange and Citizens Advice offer the same free role; in the US, look for a nonprofit credit counsellor rather than a fee-charging debt-settlement company. A counsellor's involvement also signals to Afterpay that the hardship is documented, not tactical.

FAQ

Will Afterpay waive my late fees if I ask?

It may, as part of an agreed hardship arrangement β€” waiving late fees is one of the published options. It is not automatic: contact Afterpay, explain the hardship, and ask for the waiver in writing.

Can I still use Afterpay during a hardship plan?

No. During an agreed hardship arrangement you cannot make new purchases until you have paid all amounts owed. After completion, reinstatement is assessed case by case.

Is rescheduling one payment the same as hardship?

No. Rescheduling a single payment in the app is a self-serve timing fix with limits. A hardship arrangement is a formal plan for genuine financial difficulty, with schedule changes, fee waivers, and a payment plan.

What if Afterpay refuses hardship help?

Ask for the refusal in writing, then get free independent advice (National Debt Helpline in Australia, StepChange/Citizens Advice in the UK, a nonprofit counsellor in the US). A counsellor can re-present the request and check whether the provider followed its own hardship process.
