ChatGPT Subscription Refund Checker

You paid for an AI subscription you no longer want. The first question is not “can I get a refund?” — it is who billed you, because the answer decides who can refund you at all. Bought on the web, OpenAI or Anthropic decides. Bought in an app, Apple or Google Play billed you, not the AI company — and for App Store purchases only Apple can refund. And the rule most people get wrong: cancelling stops the next charge; it never refunds the current one. No refund is promised for a period you already used, except in the narrow published windows below. Answer four questions and get the exact route, with each rule named by its source.

Who actually refunds you?

Private by design — everything runs in your browser.

Which AI service did you pay for?
Who billed you? Check the receipt, not the app you open.
What happened with this charge?
Where are you based? (Regional windows only)
The Claude EEA/UK window counts 14 days from purchase. Without a charge date, that check cannot be run.
Midjourney's rule counts Fast, Turbo and Relax time together over the lifetime of the account. Leave blank for other services.

How the rules work

Cancel ≠ refund — and who billed you decides everything

Every vendor on this page says the same thing in different words: cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not return money already paid. A refund is a second, separate request, made to whoever took the payment — and for store purchases that is the store, not the AI company. Uninstalling an app never cancels anything, and deleting an AI account does not cancel an App Store subscription.

Vendor / routeWho decidesThe published rule
ChatGPT, web or Google Play billingOpenAI SupportCancel where you bought it, at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Cancelling does not automatically refund previous charges. Brazil residents have regional rules: first refund full within 7 days, then prorated; second refund full within 7 days only; third or later reviewed, prorated within 14 days if approved.
ChatGPT, App Store billingApple onlyRequest at reportaproblem.apple.com. OpenAI cannot refund App Store charges. Cancel separately in device Subscriptions.
Claude, EEA / UKAnthropicRefund within 14 days of purchase, prorated according to your use; the option may appear in Settings. Requesting a refund does not cancel the subscription.
Claude, App Store billingApple onlyOnly Apple can review and issue the refund; refunds are at Apple's discretion. Anthropic Support cannot access App Store charges.
Claude, Google Play billingAnthropic SupportEligibility check first; for an inactive subscription, provide the Google Play account email or GPA order number. Upgrading Pro, Max or Ultra to Team auto-cancels the individual plan with a prorated refund about 24 hours after the Team payment.
Midjourney, any billingMidjourneyRefund only if under 20 GPU minutes over the lifetime of the account, Fast, Turbo and Relax included. The refund option appears automatically when you cancel if you qualify; otherwise Midjourney states it is unable to provide a refund. Processing may take up to 10 business days. Suspended or terminated accounts are not eligible.
Gemini / Google AI planGoogle OneIn most countries or regions, Google storage-plan purchases are non-refundable; cancelling stops future payments and you keep the plan for the paid period. Play Store purchases follow Google Play refund policies; App Store purchases go to Apple.
Charged after cancellationVendor first, then your bankA post-cancellation charge is a billing error. Written notice to your card issuer within 60 days of the first bill or statement showing it (FCBA for credit, Regulation E for debit). Never run a vendor refund and a bank dispute on the same charge at the same time — vendors cannot process a refund while a dispute is pending.
Crypto / stablecoin paymentVendor goodwill onlyNo card network, store or bank route exists for a crypto payment. Only the vendor can return it, and nothing promises it will.

The store trap, stated plainly

If you subscribed inside an iPhone or Android app, the AI company never touched your money — Apple or Google did. Asking OpenAI or Anthropic to refund an App Store charge wastes the window: both vendors publish that they cannot see or reverse those charges. For the full store rules, including why a card chargeback on a store purchase can put the store account at risk, use our App Store & Google Play Refund Checker — this tool routes you there instead of duplicating its store rules.
