AI Subscription Refund Guide: ChatGPT, Claude & More

You paid for ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney or Gemini and you want out — maybe with money back. The refund answer is almost never “yes, automatically.” It depends on three things, in this order: who billed you, which vendor it is, and whether a published window covers you. Get the order wrong and you ask the wrong company, burn the window, or file a bank dispute that the vendor then cannot override. This guide walks the vendors one by one, from each vendor's own help pages, verified November 2, 2026. Run the AI Subscription Refund Checker first for your exact route, then use this guide for the steps.

Step 0: Find who billed you before you ask anyone

Open the receipt, not the app. “APPLE.COM/BILL” means Apple billed you. A “GOOGLE” descriptor or a GPA order number means Google Play billed you. A receipt from chatgpt.com, claude.ai, midjourney.com or Google One means the vendor billed you directly. This single fact decides the refund desk: for App Store purchases, both OpenAI and Anthropic publish that the AI company cannot see or reverse the charge — only Apple can. Asking the wrong desk first is the most common reason AI refund requests go nowhere.

Step 1: Cancel — and understand what cancelling does not do

Cancel in the place that billed you: ChatGPT web billing in Settings, then Billing, then Cancel plan; an App Store subscription in your device's Subscriptions screen; a Google Play subscription under Payments & subscriptions; a Google One membership in its membership settings. OpenAI adds a timing rule worth obeying: cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date, or the next charge may already be processed. After an ordinary cancellation you normally keep paid features until the end of the current billing period — that access, not a refund, is what cancelling buys you. Uninstalling the app cancels nothing, and deleting a ChatGPT account does not cancel an App Store subscription.

ChatGPT (OpenAI): no general refund window on the current refund page

OpenAI's cancellation page states the baseline plainly: cancelling stops future renewals and does not automatically refund previous charges, and refund eligibility depends on your purchase and location. For web or Google Play billing, request through OpenAI Support while signed in to the ChatGPT account that was charged; for App Store billing, request directly from Apple. Brazil residents have the one detailed regional schedule on the current refund page: a first refund is full if requested within 7 days of the charge and prorated for the unused portion after that; a second refund is full within 7 days and unavailable after that under these rules; a third or later refund needs additional review and, if approved, a prorated refund may be available within 14 days. Eligible Google Play refunds are currently issued in full. What this guide deliberately does not claim: several third-party guides describe a general “accidental purchase within 14 days” window for ChatGPT. That window does not appear on OpenAI's current refund page as fetched November 2, 2026, so it is not stated here as a rule — ask OpenAI Support about your specific charge instead of relying on it.

Claude (Anthropic): a 14-day EEA/UK window, prorated — and little else

Claude's refund page (updated October 30, 2026) defines refunds narrowly. In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, you may receive a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated according to your use, with the option possibly appearing in Settings. For iOS purchases, only Apple can review and issue a refund, at Apple's discretion. For Android purchases, Anthropic Support checks eligibility first; for an inactive subscription, have your Google Play account email or GPA order number ready. One automatic exception exists: upgrading from Pro, Max or Ultra to a Team plan auto-cancels the individual plan with a prorated refund for the unused portion, issued about 24 hours after the Team payment. Outside these cases, cancelling a Claude plan simply ends it at the close of the paid period. Anthropic also cannot process a refund while a bank dispute on the same payment is pending — so do not file both at once.

Midjourney: the 20-GPU-minute lifetime test

Midjourney's rule is the strictest on this page and the most mechanical. You are eligible for a refund only if you have used less than 20 GPU minutes over the lifetime of your account — Fast, Turbo and Relax time all count. If you qualify, the refund option appears automatically when you cancel; if it does not appear, Midjourney states it is unable to provide a refund. Accounts suspended or terminated for a Terms of Service or Community Guidelines violation are not eligible at all, and processing may take up to 10 business days depending on your bank. The practical consequence: a single evening of heavy generation can end refund eligibility permanently, even if you have barely used the current month. Check your lifetime usage before you assume anything.

Gemini / Google AI plans: a Google One membership, non-refundable in most countries

A paid Gemini plan is sold as a Google One membership. Google One Help states that in most countries or regions, storage-plan purchases are non-refundable, and the storage you purchased is yours for the length of the subscription even if you cancel. Cancelling stops future Google One payments; you keep the benefits until the paid period ends. Play Store purchases go to Google Play's refund policies, App Store purchases to Apple support, and Israel-based members may have a partial-refund option under Google One's own policy. If Apple billed your Gemini plan, use the store route, not Google's.

The store route in full — and why chargebacks are last here

For any App Store purchase, Apple Support's route is: sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com, choose “I'd like to,” then “Request a refund,” pick the reason and the subscription, and submit; eligibility varies by region, and approved funds may take additional time to reach your payment method. A refund request does not cancel the subscription, so cancel separately. For the deeper store rules — including why a card chargeback on a store purchase can put the store account itself at risk — read our App Store & Google Play Refund Checker and its companion guide instead of duplicating those rules here.

Charged after you cancelled: the billing-error fallback

A charge taken after a confirmed cancellation is different from a change of mind: it is a billing error. Keep the cancellation confirmation — the email or the subscription screen showing the end date — and ask the billing party for a refund of that charge first. If it refuses, file a written billing-error notice with your card issuer within 60 days of the first bill or statement showing the charge: the Fair Credit Billing Act for credit cards, Regulation E for debit. This is also the route for genuinely unauthorised charges, where you should also lock or replace the card and change the account password first. One discipline applies throughout: never run a vendor refund and a bank dispute on the same charge at the same time. OpenAI states it cannot issue a separate refund while a dispute is active, and Anthropic says the same — pick one path, finish it, then use the other if it fails.

Paid with crypto, or a virtual card?

A crypto or stablecoin payment has no card network behind it, so there is no bank dispute, no store refund and no chargeback — only a goodwill request to the vendor, and nobody can promise it succeeds. Treat anyone offering to “reverse” a crypto payment for a fee as a recovery scam. A virtual card number is different: a bank or fintech issued that number, so if the vendor refuses, the dispute goes through that issuer, not through the app that generated the number.

When every route says no

Most used-period AI subscriptions end here: no refund, but no further charges either, provided you cancelled in the place that billed you. Confirm the cancellation on the billing platform itself — a subscription screen showing it no longer renews — and keep the confirmation. If a new charge appears after that confirmation, it is a billing error, and the 60-day written-notice clock above is your route. Never pay a third party to “recover” a subscription payment; the vendor, the store and your bank are the only three desks that can move the money.

Dropped as unverified: the widely repeated “accidental ChatGPT purchase within 14 days” refund window — it appears in third-party guides but not on OpenAI's current refund page as fetched November 2, 2026, so neither this guide nor the checker states it as a rule.
