A payment sent to the wrong person is not lost automatically β but the fix depends entirely on whether the payment is still pending. If it is pending, unclaimed, or not yet accepted, cancel it yourself in the app: that is always step 1, and it is the only step that needs no one else's cooperation. Once it has completed, no app lets you pull it back alone. This guide works through the pending rule, the exact per-app steps for Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, and Apple Cash, the message scripts, the screenshot checklist, and the two mislabellings that lose these cases β filing an authorized mistake as unauthorized, and treating a scam as a mistake.
Pending or completed β that is the whole fork, and everything else follows from it. A payment that is still pending, unclaimed, or not yet accepted can usually be cancelled by the sender in the app: open the transaction, look for a Cancel option, use it, screenshot the confirmation. A completed payment cannot be cancelled on Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, or Apple Cash, so the recipient becomes the route, and if the recipient cannot be reached, platform support becomes the last route β with the honest limit that support can ask but cannot force a stranger to return money you authorized sending. A wrong amount follows the same fork with one change: for a pending wrong amount, cancel and re-send the correct amount; for a completed wrong amount, ask the recipient to send back the extra amount only, not the whole payment. And two situations are not wrong-person mistakes at all: a payment someone else sent from your account without your permission is an unauthorized transfer (report it immediately to the platform and your bank; Regulation E gives a 60-day statement window for the error notice, 12 CFR 1005.11), and a payment you were tricked into sending is a scam (use the Scam Recovery Navigator). This guide covers accidental payments only; the lanes get their own section below so they are never filed as mistakes.
Every app's pending step has the same shape β find the transaction, find Cancel, use it β but the details differ, and the details are what decide whether Cancel is even there. On Zelle, go to Activity and choose Cancel This Payment, but only if the recipient has not yet enrolled: once enrolled, the money goes directly to their bank account and cannot be cancelled, so a missing Cancel option means the payment has already landed. A Zelle payment to someone who never enrols expires after 14 days and returns automatically. On Venmo, only a payment to a phone number or email address that is not registered on Venmo can be taken back while pending; once a payment reaches the recipient's Venmo account it generally cannot be cancelled. On Cash App, a pending payment may show a Cancel option and a completed payment cannot be cancelled β no expiry day-count is stated for Cash App here, because none was verified to a primary Cash App page for this build. On PayPal, go to Activity and cancel while the payment is still unclaimed, for either payment type. On Apple Cash, cancel until the other person accepts; if they do not accept within 7 days, the money returns automatically. In every case, screenshot the cancellation confirmation the moment it appears β a cancelled payment with no proof is a dispute waiting to happen if the money moves anyway.
Once a payment has completed, the app decides the route, so work down the row for your app and no other row. Zelle: the recipient is the route, because an enrolled recipient's money is already in their bank account and Zelle itself does not handle disputes β your bank is the contact for a dispute question, and the claim must be described as an authorized mistake, not an unauthorized transfer. Venmo, person you know: send a charge request for the same amount (or the extra amount, for a wrong amount) with a note explaining the mistake, and follow up with a direct message. Venmo, stranger: contact Support with four details ready β the recipient username, the amount, the date, and the intended person's username, phone number, or email address β via Me, then Settings, then Get Help, then Chat With Us; Venmo says it will do its best, with no promise of recovery, and opening a dispute on a wrong-person payment will not rectify it, so do not use that route for this problem. Cash App: ask the recipient to refund through Activity, then the payment, then the three-dot menu, then Refund, then OK β or send a Request for the amount with a note; support cannot force a refund. PayPal Friends and Family: keep working with the recipient through their contact details or the in-transaction Chat, because a Friends and Family payment cannot be reported as a problem. PayPal Goods and Services: ask the recipient the same way, and if they do not respond, open a dispute in the Resolution Center within the filing timeframe. Apple Cash, once accepted: ask the recipient to send it back; there is no in-app force-refund step stated on the Apple support page for this build.
| App | Still pending | Completed, recipient reachable | Completed, stranger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zelle | Activity, Cancel This Payment (only if recipient not enrolled); unclaimed expires after 14 days | Ask the recipient to send it back; bank is the dispute contact | Ask through any channel, then bank as an authorized mistake |
| Venmo | Take back while pending, only to an unregistered address | Charge request for the same amount, with a note | Support via Me, Settings, Get Help, Chat With Us, with four details |
| Cash App | Cancel option if shown on the pending payment | Recipient refunds via Activity, payment, three-dot menu, Refund, OK β or a Request | Request in the app, then support (cannot force a refund) |
| PayPal Friends and Family | Activity, Cancel while unclaimed | Contact details or in-transaction Chat; cannot be reported as a problem | Same two channels, then follow up once through the other |
| PayPal Goods and Services | Activity, Cancel while unclaimed | Contact details or Chat, then Resolution Center dispute if no response | Contact details or Chat, then Resolution Center dispute if no response |
| Apple Cash | Cancel until accepted; returns automatically if not accepted within 7 days | Ask the recipient to send it back | Ask through any channel; keep screenshots and the transaction record |
Keep every message to three facts and one ask, because a long apology buries the facts the recipient needs to act. For a wrong person: "On [date] I sent [amount] to you by mistake β it was meant for [intended person]. Could you please send it back? I have attached a screenshot of the payment." For a wrong amount: "On [date] I meant to send you [correct amount] but sent [amount sent]. Could you please send back the [extra amount] difference?" For a stranger through support, the message is the four details Venmo asks for, or the equivalent on another app: recipient as shown, amount, date, and the intended person's details. Do not threaten, do not accuse, and do not offer a fee for returning your own money β a recipient who feels accused stops replying, and a fee offer turns a mistake into a negotiation. If the first message gets no reply, follow up once through a different channel (a direct message if you used an in-app request, an in-app request if you used a message), then move to the support route for that app rather than messaging repeatedly.
Screenshot everything before it can change: the payment itself (amount, date, recipient as shown, status), the intended recipient's correct details, every message you send and every reply, every support conversation, and any cancellation confirmation. Save the screenshots outside the app β a chat thread inside the app is not a backup if the account is ever locked or the thread is deleted. The reason is practical, not bureaucratic: every route after the recipient β support, a PayPal Goods and Services dispute, a bank question β asks for the same three things (what was sent, where it was meant to go, and what you already tried), and a screenshot answers all three faster than a retelling. For a wrong amount, keep the message or agreement that shows the correct amount alongside the payment screenshot: the difference between the two is the amount you are asking back, and a claim for the whole payment when only the extra amount is wrong is a claim for money you meant to send.
Unauthorized: if someone else sent money from your account without your permission, report it immediately to the platform and to your bank as an unauthorized transfer. Under Regulation E, the error notice is due within 60 days of the statement showing the error (12 CFR 1005.11) β that is the outer window, not a waiting period, and delay weakens the claim. Do not ask the recipient for the money back as if it were your mistake, and do not file it as a wrong-person payment. Conversely, do not route your own authorized mistake through the unauthorized lane: an authorized payment sent to the wrong person is not an unauthorized transfer under Regulation E, and a claim filed on the wrong ground can be rejected on that ground. Scam: if you were tricked into sending β an imposter, a fake invoice, pressure to pay β use the Scam Recovery Navigator instead of this guide. Never send a second "verification" payment to prove anything or unlock a refund, and never pay a recovery fee to someone who promises to get the money back β a fee charged to recover money is itself a common second scam.
If the payment was funded by a credit card, there is one further question worth asking, and it is a question, not a filing instruction: ask your card issuer whether a chargeback applies to this payment. The issuer decides, and the platform route and a card chargeback are not two recoveries for one loss. Never file both a platform claim and a card chargeback and keep both β if one route returns the money, tell the other route at once. This fallback is hedged deliberately: the platforms' own help pages are the source for the routes in this guide, and whether a card issuer treats a given P2P payment as chargeable is the issuer's decision on the facts of that payment, not a rule this guide can state for every card.
I sent money to the wrong person on Zelle. Can I cancel it?
Only if the recipient has not yet enrolled: go to Activity and choose Cancel This Payment. Once the recipient is enrolled, the money goes directly to their bank account and cannot be cancelled. An unclaimed Zelle payment expires after 14 days and returns automatically. Zelle itself does not handle disputes β your bank is the contact.
I accidentally paid a stranger on Venmo. What do I do?
Contact Venmo Support with the recipient username, the amount, the date, and the intended person's username, phone number, or email address, via Me, then Settings, then Get Help, then Chat With Us. Venmo says it will do its best, with no promise of recovery. Opening a dispute on a wrong-person payment will not rectify it.
Can Cash App support force a refund of a payment I sent to the wrong person?
No. A completed Cash App payment cannot be cancelled, and support cannot force a refund. Ask the recipient to refund it (Activity, payment, three-dot menu, Refund, OK) or send a Request for the amount.
I sent a PayPal payment to the wrong person. Does it matter whether it was Friends and Family or Goods and Services?
Yes. An unclaimed payment of either type can be cancelled from Activity. A completed Friends and Family payment cannot be reported as a problem β keep working with the recipient. A completed Goods and Services payment can go to the Resolution Center as a dispute if the recipient does not respond, within the filing timeframe.
Someone else sent money from my account without my permission. Is that a wrong-person mistake?
No. That is an unauthorized transfer, not a mistake you made. Report it immediately to the platform and your bank. Under Regulation E, the error notice is due within 60 days of the statement showing the error (12 CFR 1005.11) β report it now, do not wait for that date.
For the checker that produces your exact route, see the P2P Wrong-Person Payment Checker. If you were tricked into sending, see the Scam Recovery Navigator. For filing clocks in full, see the Chargeback Deadline Calculator, and for drafting the letter, the Dispute Letter Generator.
Sources (verified November 3, 2026): Zelle help β cancel only if the recipient has not yet enrolled (Activity, then Cancel This Payment); once enrolled, money goes directly to their bank account and cannot be cancelled; unclaimed payments expire after 14 days and return automatically; Zelle does not handle disputes, contact your bank; an authorized mistake is not an unauthorized transfer under Regulation E. Venmo help ("I accidentally paid a stranger") β payments generally cannot be cancelled once they reach the recipient's Venmo account; payments to an unregistered phone number or email address can be taken back while pending; known person: charge request for the same amount with a note; stranger: Support with recipient username, amount, date, and intended person's username, phone number, or email address via Me, Settings, Get Help, Chat With Us; Venmo will do its best, with no promise of recovery; opening a dispute on a wrong-person payment will not rectify it. Cash App help β completed payments cannot be cancelled; pending payments may show a Cancel option; completed: recipient refund via Activity, payment, three-dot menu, Refund, OK, or a Request; support cannot force a refund; no Cash App expiry day-count verified to a primary page, so none is stated. PayPal help ("sent a payment to the wrong person") β unclaimed: Activity, then Cancel; completed: ask the recipient via contact details or in-transaction Chat; Goods and Services with no response: dispute in the Resolution Center within the filing timeframe; Friends and Family payments cannot be reported as a problem. Apple support β cancel until the other person accepts; if not accepted within 7 days, money returns automatically; once accepted, ask them to send it back. Regulation E, 12 CFR 1005.11 β error notice within 60 days of the statement showing the error, for unauthorized transfers only. Nothing beyond the rules above is claimed, because nothing else was verified for this build. Your bank, the platform's terms, and your account agreement are the final word.
