Does Shopify Protect cover MY orders, or am I on my own for chargebacks? The honest answer is a checklist, not a slogan: Protect reimburses a fraudulent chargeback only on an order that passes every one of Shopify's own gates — United States store and Shopify Payments account, Shop Pay payment, physical items requiring shipping only, fulfilled within 7 days, in transit within 10 days, supported carrier, unchanged shipping address, Protect status in admin. Miss one gate and you fight the chargeback yourself. And if the order was not paid with Shop Pay, there is nothing to switch on yet at all: Shopify's Fall '26 Editions label that extension "coming soon", with no date. Enter one order below and get its verdict, its failing gates, and its reimbursement math.
Private by design — everything runs in your browser.
Every gate below comes from Shopify's own Help Center page on protecting an order with Shopify Protect, read November 3, 2026, except the two status rows, which come from Shopify's Fall '26 Editions. Nothing here is a roundup's paraphrase dressed up as a rule.
| Gate | Who sets it | The rule |
|---|---|---|
| Payment method | Shopify Help Center | Shop Pay only — including Shop Pay accelerated checkout on Facebook, Instagram or Google. Shop Pay Installments orders are not eligible. Managed Markets orders processed using Shopify Payments are automatically protected on this gate. Non-Shop Pay protection is "coming soon" — see the status row below. |
| Contents | Shopify Help Center | Only orders that exclusively contain physical items requiring shipping. Any digital product, or any product bought online and picked up in-store, voids protection even in a mixed order. |
| Subscription | Shopify Help Center | Only the first order of a subscription is eligible; subsequent recurring orders receive no coverage. |
| Location and account | Shopify Help Center | Merchant located in the United States with a United States Shopify Payments account. |
| Fulfillment and tracking | Shopify Help Center | Fulfilled with valid tracking within 7 days of the order being placed, and in transit to the customer within 10 days. Tracking added after the fulfillment deadline is not eligible. |
| Carrier | Shopify Help Center | Valid tracking from a supported carrier for every item: SFN, USPS, UPS, Canada Post, DHL Express, FedEx, TForce Final Mile, Lone Star Overnight, United Delivery Service, CDL Last Mile, Lasership, GLS, Ontrac. |
| Shipping address | Shopify Help Center | Changing the shipping address after checkout voids coverage for that order. |
| Protect status | Shopify Help Center | Only orders with a Shopify Protect status are eligible — check the status of each order in admin. |
| Dispute type | Shopify Help Center | Fraudulent chargebacks on eligible, protected orders are reimbursed (amount plus fee) and handled for you. Other dispute types — not received, not as described, damaged, cancelled subscription — are not Protect claims. |
| Non-Shop Pay extension | Fall '26 Editions labelling | Labelled "coming soon", with no date from Shopify. It cannot be switched on yet. Do not forecast it, do not promise it to a customer, and do not count it in any coverage claim. |
| Protect app features | Fall '26 Editions labelling | The Protect app's new features — including the Rule Builder for writing and backtesting your own fraud rules — are labelled "rolling out soon". Check your own admin before planning around them; no availability date or price is claimed here. |
| Standard response window | Shopify Help Center | For chargebacks Protect does not cover, usually 7–21 days after filing to submit evidence. The due date on your own dispute record governs. Bank review can take up to 75 days after submitting; the decision is final with no appeal, and Shopify does not decide outcomes. |
Two traps. The first is treating "Shopify Protect" as blanket coverage: it is a narrow fraud-only reimbursement on a narrow set of orders, and most of the chargebacks a store actually fights — a parcel that never arrived, a product the customer says is not as described, a subscription the customer says they cancelled — sit outside it entirely. Counting those as covered is how a store discovers, mid-dispute, that it was on its own all along. The second trap is the coming-soon trap: a feature announced for non-Shop Pay orders, with no date, is not coverage. A forecast, a promise to a customer, or a decision to stop fighting non-Shop Pay fraud cases because "Protect will cover it soon" all spend money that does not exist yet. Until the extension appears in your own admin, non-Shop Pay orders get the standard fight, inside the standard window, with the standard evidence.
No win rate of its own, and no repetition of Shopify's "60% more product-not-received disputes won" figure as fact: that is Shopify's own claim, repeated across Fall '26 roundups with no published methodology in the sources read for this build, so it is flagged as such in the companion guide and appears nowhere here as a number you can plan on. No chargeback fee amount: Shopify's Help Center says the fee is returned when a chargeback is won, but no fee amount was verified on a shopify.com page for this build, so the checker takes your fee as an input and never defaults it. No single response deadline: 7–21 days is a usual range, and your own dispute record governs. No Rule Builder price, backtest window or availability date, and no launch date for non-Shop Pay protection — both are "rolling out" / "coming soon" with no date from Shopify.
The gates worked through order by order, the coming-soon trap in full, the standard fight path for everything Protect does not cover, and the flagged 60% claim handled honestly — with the checker above the fold.
