Shopify Protect Eligibility: Does It Cover Your Orders?

Verified November 3, 2026 · Free checker above the fold on the companion tool page

Does Shopify Protect cover MY orders, or am I on my own for chargebacks? The answer is a checklist with no partial credit: a fraudulent chargeback on an order that passes every gate is reimbursed — amount plus fee — and handled for you; anything else is a standard fight you run yourself, inside a short window, with evidence matched to the reason code. This guide works through the gates one by one, names the coming-soon trap for non-Shop Pay orders plainly, and ends with the vendor claim you should not plan a budget on.

The gates, one by one

All of these come from one Shopify Help Center page, "Protecting an order with Shopify Protect", read November 3, 2026. If a gate is not on that page, it is not in this guide as a rule — and where this guide goes beyond that page, it says so and names the other source.

GateThe ruleWhy stores fail it
United States store and accountMerchant located in the United States with a United States Shopify Payments account.Non-US stores assume a global program. It is not one.
Shop Pay paymentOnly orders processed through Shop Pay, including Shop Pay accelerated checkout on Facebook, Instagram or Google. Shop Pay Installments orders are not eligible. Managed Markets orders processed using Shopify Payments are automatically protected on this gate.Installments orders look like Shop Pay orders. They are excluded by name.
Physical items onlyOnly orders that exclusively contain physical items requiring shipping. Any digital product, or any product bought online and picked up in-store, voids protection even in a mixed order. One digital add-on — a download, a gift card in the same basket — voids the whole order.
First subscription order onlyShopify Protect analyzes the initial subscription order; subsequent recurring orders receive no coverage.Stores assume a protected first order protects the subscription. It does not.
Fulfilled, 7 days / in transit, 10 daysAll non-refunded line items Fulfilled; fulfilled with valid tracking within 7 days of the order being placed, and in transit within 10 days. Tracking added after the fulfillment deadline is not eligible.Slow fulfillment is the most common self-inflicted failure — and unlike a carrier choice, it cannot be fixed after day 7.
Supported carrier, every itemSFN, USPS, UPS, Canada Post, DHL Express, FedEx, TForce Final Mile, Lone Star Overnight, United Delivery Service, CDL Last Mile, Lasership, GLS, Ontrac. One item on an unsupported carrier voids the order.Split fulfillments: one item ships with an unlisted local carrier and the order is out.
Unchanged shipping addressChanging the shipping address after checkout voids coverage for that order.A helpful address correction for a customer who moved — done after checkout — voids the order.
Protect status in adminOnly orders with a Shopify Protect status are eligible. Check each order's status; do not assume it from the other gates.Passing the gates on paper is not the status. The status in admin is the eligibility record.
Fraudulent chargeback onlyAn eligible and protected order that receives a fraudulent chargeback is reimbursed the chargeback amount and the associated chargeback fee, and the process is handled for you.Every other dispute type is a standard fight, even on a perfect order.

Three orders, three verdicts

Order one: a US store, Shop Pay, a single physical item, fulfilled on day 3 with USPS tracking, in transit on day 4, address untouched, Protect status showing — and the chargeback says the purchase was fraudulent. Verdict: Protected. Shopify reimburses the amount plus the fee and handles the process. Order two: the same order, but the customer added a digital download to the basket. Verdict: Not protected. One digital item voids the whole order, and the fraud chargeback is now a standard fight. Order three: the same order as order one, but paid with a card directly, not through Shop Pay. Verdict: Coming soon — not protected yet. No gate failed, no fix exists, and no date exists either: the extension is labelled "coming soon" in Shopify's Fall '26 Editions, and until it appears in that store's own admin, the order is fought the standard way. Run all three through the checker and the difference between "fix it" and "wait for Shopify" is the difference between a same-week action and a forecast you must not make.

The coming-soon trap

Shopify's Fall '26 Edition, "Exponential", published October 28, 2026, presents Shopify Protect as a collection of risk and disputes tools in the admin, with a Rule Builder for writing and testing your own fraud rules. Independent roundups of Shopify's Editions page agree on the status labels that matter here: the Protect app's new features are "rolling out soon", and chargeback protection for orders not paid with Shop Pay is "coming soon". Shopify gives no date for either. The trap is treating an announcement as coverage: dropping fraud screening on non-Shop Pay orders, telling a customer an order is protected, or budgeting a lower fraud loss for next quarter on the strength of a label with no date. The honest handling is narrow — keep fighting non-Shop Pay fraud cases the standard way, fix the gates that are already fixable (fulfillment timing, carrier, Protect status on Shop Pay orders), and check your own admin before planning around anything labelled rolling out or coming soon. A label is not a launch.

The standard fight path

For every chargeback Protect does not cover — wrong payment method, failed gate, or non-fraud dispute type — Shopify's Help Center on responding to chargebacks and inquiries sets the shape. The merchant usually has 7 to 21 days after the chargeback is filed to submit evidence, and the due date on the merchant's own dispute record governs, not any range in this guide or any other article. The bank and the card company decide the outcome, not Shopify; review can take up to 75 days after submitting; and the decision is final, with no appeal. If the merchant wins, the disputed amount and the chargeback fee are returned. If the merchant loses, both are gone. Two practical consequences follow. First, decide fight-or-accept fast — the window is measured in days, and a perfect evidence pack submitted late is worth nothing. Second, never count a win as erased: the money comes back, but the dispute still counts in the store's chargeback rate, which is why the gates above, applied before shipping, matter more than any fight after the fact.

The flagged 60% claim

Across Fall '26 roundups you will read that Shopify says Protect wins "60% more product-not-received disputes" — sometimes phrased as disputes won, sometimes as a win-rate improvement, with no consistent baseline. That inconsistency is the point. None of the sources read for this guide publishes Shopify's methodology: no sample size, no period, no definition of the comparison group, no baseline win rate. A claim that cannot be re-derived from a stated method is a vendor claim, not a fact, and this guide does not repeat it as one. Note the tension it also creates: item-not-received disputes are exactly the type Protect's own Help Center page does not cover for reimbursement, so a "product-not-received disputes won" figure, whatever it measures, is about the wider Protect dispute tooling (AI-drafted responses, attached delivery proof) — not about reimbursement coverage. Do not budget on it, do not quote it to a customer, and do not let it soften the gate checklist above. The gates are verifiable; the 60% is not.

FAQ

Does Shopify Protect cover my orders, or am I on my own for chargebacks?

Only orders passing every gate — US store and Shopify Payments account, Shop Pay (or Managed Markets) payment, physical items requiring shipping only, fulfilled within 7 days, in transit within 10 days, supported carrier, unchanged address, Protect status in admin — and only for a fraudulent chargeback. Everything else is a standard fight.

Does Shopify Protect cover orders not paid with Shop Pay?

Not yet. Shopify's Fall '26 Editions label that extension "coming soon" with no date. Until it appears in your own admin, non-Shop Pay orders have no Protect coverage.

What does Shopify Protect reimburse on a covered chargeback?

The chargeback amount and the associated chargeback fee, and Shopify handles the chargeback process for you, according to Shopify's Help Center.

Does Shopify Protect cover item-not-received disputes?

No. Protect covers fraudulent chargebacks on eligible orders. Item-not-received, not-as-described, damaged, cancelled-subscription and other service or quality disputes follow the standard fight path, usually within 7 to 21 days after filing, on the due date shown on your own dispute record.

Is Shopify's 60% more disputes won claim reliable?

It cannot be verified from the sources read for this guide. It is Shopify's own figure, repeated across Fall '26 roundups with no published methodology, sample, period or baseline. Treat it as a vendor claim, not a fact, and never plan a budget on it.
